Hi,what are the best inline skates for 10-12yr olds?

What do they want to do with the skates?

Agressive - skating on ramps, rails, jumping etc.

Recreation/Fitness - Skating on streets or trails to go somewhere.

Other (less likely) things would be slalom, dance moves, and racing.

If they want to do agressive skating, you really want to get agressive skates. The moves just are not good when done with others.

There is no exact line between recreational and fitness skates. Fitness is generally defined as going faster or farther than recreational. The skates tend to be more expensive, have larger wheels, slightly shorter cuffs on the boots, and a longer distance between the front and rear wheels.

Rec/fitness skates are the most flexible. Rec skates are also useable for hockey, slaloms, and dance moves. Fitness skates are also useable for lower levels of racing.

If they are likely to use them regularly, go for a better skate. Better generally includes having a metal frame (the part that holds the wheels) and wheels that are 80mm or larger. Some may have wheels that are smaller than 80mm but be able to use 80mm wheels later. Smaller wheels are harder to find as replacements.

The two major brands in the US are Rollerblade and K2. The advantage to buying the major brands is that getting replacement brake blocks or axles can be difficult for the minor brands. The wheels and bearings for any but the cheapest skates are standardized. You can get new ones from any source.

Fit for a growing person is a problem. The best fit is evenly snug all around the foot except for the ends of the toes. That helps the skates act as part of the feet, but leaves no room to grow.

One trick is to put one or two flat insoles under the formed one that is in the skates. It takes up the extera space in a skate a half or full size too large. As the feet grow, you can remove one or both.

Have them try on several skate types. How they fit the foot is different between different models, even within one brand.
