I'm sort of on the smart side, but not really. If I had to guess, my IQ is 110-130. I'm not into any sports (they bore me) or music (bleh). I enjoy writing, sort of, but that's an on-and-off thing. I'm not much of an artist either. I'm female, but I'm not very girly at all. I hate shopping and all that stuff. I do enjoy inline skating, but there's no skating club near by, we don't even have a rink! (We only have an ice-skating rink and I dislike that) Plus, I live in a very hilly area. I'm a freethinker, (although I care about emotions, but I am agnostic) and I enjoy debating my "religion", I would join the debate club, but I'm not sure it's what I think it is. Also, it takes place during lunch. A) I don't want to limit my lunchtime-it's the only time I can talk to my friends B) I really want something that's sort of like a class. I don't want a hobby. I want something set, some sort of lessons. I hate having my calendar so empty and spending so much time on the computer and listening
I want to start a new class?
what about a poetry class?...or a song writing class??...just a thought!....i wanna take welding, but that is the artist in me...i would make it a hobby TURN it into more art . good luck i hope 2008 is fulfilling to you!
Reply:The SCA isn't a class, but they sometimes offer collegium type things. It is an educational organisation focussing on Western Europe from the fall of the Roman Empire, to the death of Elizabeth the First. I've been involved for nearly two years and as part of my involvement tried the following:
Medieval cookery, medieval dancing, knitting, tabletweaving, fingerloop braiding, dyeing with natural dyes, dressmaking, female Norse costuming, freeform embroidery, felting, rapier, heraldry, Polish noble naming practises, and making a cotehardie. I've learnt how to tell the difference between linen and cotton, that making a cotehardie out of linen is a very large challenge, that I'm going to use wool next time, and how to tell if wool is actually wool or if it is synthetic. It's also encouraged me to read about different historical figures that I wouldn't have thought of otherwise and to look at medieval paintings to try and train myself to notice detail. Eventually I'll get good enough at it, that I'll be able to look at paintings and see how the clothing was made, then make it!
If you are interested in any of that stuff, or anything else medieval, you might just enjoy the SCA. It will certainly fill up your calender if you want it to. It's not too expensive really, unless you get carried away. Put "The Medieval Tailor's Assistant" on your Christmas list next year :) That's how I tend to get my hands on resources. Also, your "kingdom" will probably put out an arts and sciences magazine a few times per year. That'll have a variety of topics, often "how to's."
Try rapier. It's like fencing but way better!
On an unrelated note, if you want to learn another language, Sign Language is a good one. Much easier to learn than another spoken language, and a little goes a long way.
Reply:How about picking up a foreign language? It'll give you something to do and you'll learn something useful.
Reply:Go to HP Online classes at info@hho-onlineclasses.com. HP has a wide variety of structured free online classes covering several topics related to computers, digital photography, scrapbooking, home office, etc. The classes are self paced within a time limit %26amp; include lessons, assignments, an instructor and classmates to interact with online. It is a really good program very similar to taking a college course only it is free and the classes run approx. 6-10 wks. ea. This is a continuing education format and classes do not convert to college credit. The program is fun and educational. If you are serious about taking a class, here is a place to start.
